Adrenal cancer is a rare cancer that starts in one or both of the small triangular glands (adrenal glands) above your kidneys. The adrenal glands produce hormones that instruct virtually every organ and tissue in your body.
Adrenal cancer, also called adrenal cancer, can occur at any age. However, it is more likely to affect children under the age of 5 and adults in their forties and fifties.

The signs and symptoms of adrenal cancer are:
- Weight gain
- Muscle weakness
- Pink or purple stretch marks on the skin
- Hormonal changes in women that can lead to excessive facial hair, hair loss on the head, and irregular periods
- Hormonal changes in men that can lead to enlarged breast tissue and contraction of the testicles

The reasons
It is not known what causes adrenal cancer.
Adrenal cancer occurs when something causes changes (mutations) in the DNA of a cell in the adrenal gland. A cell’s DNA contains the instructions that tell a cell what to do. Mutations can instruct the cell to multiply uncontrollably and continue to live when healthy cells die. In this case, the abnormal cells build up and form a tumor. Risk factors
Adrenal cancer is more common in people with hereditary syndromes that increase the risk of certain types of cancer. These hereditary syndromes include:
- Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome
- Carney complex
- Li Fraumeni Syndrome
- Lynch Syndrome
- Multiple endocrine neoplasia, type 1 (MEN 1).
