A brain aneurysm (AN-yoo-riz-um) is a bulge or swelling in a blood vessel in the brain. It often looks like a berry hanging from a pole. - A brain aneurysm can leak or rupture and cause bleeding in the brain (hemorrhagic stroke). Most commonly, a broken brain aneurysm occurs in the space between the brain and the thin tissue that covers the brain. This type of hemorrhagic stroke is known as subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Common signs and symptoms of a ruptured aneurysm include:
- Sudden and extremely severe headache
- Nausea and vomiting
- Torticollis
- Blurred or double vision
- Photosensitivity
- Epileptic crisis
- A droopy eyelid

The reasons
The causes of the brain aneurysm are unknown, but a number of factors can increase your risk.
Risk factors
A number of factors can contribute to a weak artery wall and increase the risk of a brain aneurysm or rupture. Brain aneurysms are more common in adults than children and more common in women than men.
