overview
Chronic granulomatous disease (gran-u-LOM-uh-tus) (CGD) is a hereditary disease that occurs when a type of white blood cell (phagocyte) that usually helps your body fight infections doesn’t work properly. As a result, phagocytes cannot protect your body from bacterial and fungal infections.
- People with chronic granulomatous disease may develop infections of the lungs, skin, lymph nodes, liver, stomach and intestines, or other areas. You can also develop clusters of white blood cells in infected areas. Most people will be diagnosed with CGD in childhood, but some people may not be diagnosed until adulthood.

- It is also common for people with CGD to have infections of the skin, liver, stomach and intestines, brain, and eyes. The signs and symptoms associated with infection include:Chronic granulomatous disease Treatment Hyderabad

The reasons
A mutation in any of the five genes can cause CGD. People with CGD inherit the gene mutation from one parent. Genes usually produce proteins that make an enzyme that helps your immune system function properly. The enzyme is active in white blood cells (phagocytes) that trap and destroy fungi and bacteria to protect them from infection. The enzyme is also active in immune cells that help your body heal.
- When there are mutations in any of these genes, protective proteins are not produced, or they are produced, but they do not work properly.
- Some people with CGD do not have any of these genetic mutations. In these cases, doctors do not know what is causing the disease.Chronic granulomatous disease Treatment Hyderabad
