The common cold is a viral infection of the nose and throat (upper respiratory tract). It’s generally harmless, although it doesn’t appear to be. Many types of viruses can cause the common cold.

- A cold virus enters your body through your mouth, eyes, or nose. The virus can be spread through airborne droplets when someone who is sick coughs, sneezes, or speaks.

Prevention

Disinfect your belongings. Clean kitchen and bathroom counters with disinfectant, especially if a family member has a cold. Wash children’s toys regularly.
Use handkerchiefs. Sneeze and cough into the tissues. Throw away used tissues immediately and wash your hands thoroughly. - Teach children to sneeze or cough into their elbows when they don’t have a tissue. In this way, they cover their mouths without using their hands.
- Do not share. Do not share glasses or utensils with other family members. Use your own glass or disposable cup when you or someone else is sick. Label the mug or glass with the name of the person who is cold.
