- Costochondritis (kos-toe-kon-DRY-tis) is an inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the sternum. The pain caused by costochondritis can mimic that of a heart attack or other heart problems.
- Costochondritis is sometimes referred to as chest wall pain, costosternal syndrome, or costosternal chondrodynia. Sometimes the pain is accompanied by swelling (Tietze syndrome).
- Costochondritis usually has no obvious cause. Treatment is aimed at relieving your pain while you wait for the disease to resolve on its own. This can take several weeks or more.

- Occurs on the left side of your sternum
- Is sharp, painful, or pressure-like
- Affects more than one rib
- Worsens when you breathe deeply or cough
The reasons
Costochondritis usually has no clear cause. However, sometimes costochondritis can be caused by:
- Injury. A slap on the chest is an example.
- Physical suffering. Heavy lifting, rigorous movement, and severe coughing have been linked to costochondritis.
- Arthritis. Costochondritis can be linked to specific problems such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or ankylosing spondylitis.
- Joint infection. Viruses, bacteria and fungi such as tuberculosis, syphilis and aspergillosis can infect the costal joint.

Risk factors
- Costochondritis is most common in women and in people over the age of 40.
- Tietze syndrome usually occurs in adolescents and young adults, and equally common in men and women.
