Ebstein’s anomaly is a rare (congenital) heart defect at birth. In this condition, your tricuspid valve is in the wrong position and the valves (leaflets) are improperly shaped. As a result, the valve will not work properly. - Blood can leak through the valve, making your heart less efficient. Ebstein’s abnormality can also lead to an enlarged heart and heart failure.

The reasons
Ebstein’s anomaly is a heart defect that you had at birth (congenital). The cause is unknown. To understand how Ebstein’s abnormality affects your heart, it is helpful to know how the heart supplies your body with blood.

- Your heart is made up of four chambers. The two upper chambers (atria) receive blood. The two lower chambers (ventricles) pump blood.
Four valves open and close to allow blood to flow in one direction through the heart. Each valve consists of two or three strong, thin fabric flaps. A closed valve prevents blood from flowing into the next chamber or back into the previous chamber.
Risk factors
Congenital heart defects, such as Ebstein’s abnormality, occur when a baby’s heart develops in the womb.
Doctors aren’t sure what risk factors are associated with the defect. It is believed that genetic and environmental factors play a role. A family history of heart defects or the mother’s use of certain drugs, such as lithium, during pregnancy may increase the risk of Ebstein’s abnormality in the child.
