An enlarged heart (cardiomegaly) is not a disease, but a sign of another disease. - The term “cardiomegaly” refers to an enlarged heart seen on any imaging test, including a chest x-ray. More tests will then be needed to diagnose the condition that is causing an enlarged heart.

In some people, an enlarged heart does not cause any signs or symptoms. Others may have these signs and symptoms:

The reasons
- An enlarged heart can be caused by conditions that make your heart pump harder than usual, or that damage your heart muscle. Sometimes the heart gets bigger and weaker for unknown reasons. This is known as idiopathic cardiomegaly.
- Heart conditions you were born with, damage from a heart attack, or abnormal heartbeat (arrhythmia) can make your heart grow bigger. Other conditions associated with an enlarged heart include:
- Arterial hypertension. Your heart may need to pump harder to bring blood to the rest of your body and to expand and thicken the muscle.
- High blood pressure can cause the left ventricle to widen, which eventually leads to a weakening of the heart muscle. High blood pressure can also enlarge the upper chambers of your heart.
- Valvular heart disease. Four valves in your heart allow blood to flow in the right direction. If the valves are damaged by conditions such as rheumatic fever, heart defects, infections (infectious endocarditis), irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation), connective tissue disorders, certain drugs, or radiation therapy for cancer, your heart may enlarge.
Risk factors
You may be at an increased risk of developing an enlarged heart if you have any of the following risk factors:
- Arterial hypertension. Have the blood pressure read above 140/90 millimeters of mercury.
- A family history of an enlarged heart or cardiomyopathy. If an immediate family member, such as a parent or sibling, has an enlarged heart, you may be more vulnerable.
- Congenital heart defects. If you were born with a disease that affects the structure of your heart, you may be at increased risk.
- Valvular heart disease. The heart has four valves – aorta, mitral, pulmonary, and tricuspid valves – that open and close to direct blood flow through your heart. Conditions that damage the valves can cause the heart to enlarge.
