Ewing’s sarcoma (YOO-ing) is a rare type of cancer that occurs in the bones or in the soft tissues around the bones.
- Ewing’s sarcoma most commonly begins in the bones of the legs and pelvis, but can occur in any bone. Less commonly, it starts in the soft tissues of the chest, abdomen, limbs, or other areas.
- Ewing’s sarcoma is more common in children and adolescents, but it can occur at any age.

The signs and symptoms of Ewing’s sarcoma include:
- Pain, swelling, or tenderness near the affected area
- Bone pain
- Inexplicable fatigue
- Fever with no known cause
- Lose weight without trying
The reasons
It is not known what causes Ewing’s sarcoma.
Doctors know that Ewing’s sarcoma begins when a cell begins to develop changes in its DNA. A cell’s DNA contains the instructions that tell a cell what to do. The changes cause the cell to multiply and continue to live quickly, whereas healthy cells would normally die. The result is a mass (tumor) of abnormal cells that can invade and destroy healthy tissue in the body. The abnormal cells can break off and spread (metastasize) throughout the body.

Risk factors for Ewing’s sarcoma include:
Your age. Ewing’s sarcoma can occur at any age, but it is more likely to occur in children and adolescents.
