Hirsutism (HUR-soot-iz-um) is a condition in women that causes excessive growth of dark or coarse hair in a male model – the face, chest, and back.
In hirsutism, the additional hair growth often comes from an excess of male hormones (androgens), mainly testosterone.

Hirsutism is stiff or dark hair that occurs on the body where women normally do not have hair – mainly the face, chest, lower abdomen, inner thighs, and back. People have very different opinions about what is considered excessive.
When high androgen levels cause hirsutism, other signs may develop over time, a process called virilization. Signs of virilization can include:
- Deepening of the voice
- Baldness
- acne
- Decrease in breast size
- Increased muscle mass
- Enlargement of the clitoris
The reasons
Hirsutism can be caused by:
- Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). This condition, which often begins with puberty, leads to an imbalance in sex hormones. Over the years, PCOS can slowly lead to excessive hair growth, irregular periods, obesity, infertility, and sometimes multiple cysts on the ovaries.
- Cushing’s Syndrome. It happens when your body is exposed to high levels of the hormone cortisol. It can develop from your adrenal glands making too much cortisol or from long-term use of drugs like prednisone.

- Tumor. In rare cases, an androgen-secreting tumor in the ovaries or adrenal glands can cause hirsutism.
Risk factors
Several factors can affect your chances of developing hirsutism, including:
- Family history. Several diseases that cause hirsutism occur in families, including congenital adrenal hyperplasia and polycystic ovarian syndrome.
- Ancestry. Women of Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, and South Asian descent are more likely to have more body hair for no apparent cause than other women.
- Obesity. Obesity leads to increased production of androgens, which can make hirsutism worse.
