- Urticaria – also known as urticaria (ur-tih-KAR-e-uh) – is a skin reaction that causes itching that ranges from small to large patches. Hives can be triggered by many conditions and substances, including exposure to certain foods or drugs.
Angioedema can occur with hives or alone and cause swelling of the deeper layers of the skin, often around the face and lips. Urticaria and angioedema are common. Most of the time they are harmless, disappear within a day and leave no lasting marks even without treatment.
