Hurdle cell cancer (HEERT-luh) is a rare cancer that affects the thyroid.
- The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland at the base of the neck. It secretes hormones that are important in regulating your body’s metabolism.
- Hurthle cell cancer is also called Hurthle cell carcinoma or oxyphilic cell carcinoma. Hurdle cell cancer is one of the many cancers that affect the thyroid.

The signs and symptoms of Hurthle cell cancer can include:
- A lump on the back of your neck, right under your Adam’s apple
- Pain in the neck or throat
- Hoarseness or other changes in your voice
- shortness of breath
- Difficulty swallowing
The reasons
It is not known what causes Hurthle cell cancer.
- Doctors know that cancer begins when a cell develops defects in its DNA – the genetic material that contains instructions for biochemical processes in your body. When DNA is altered or damaged, these genes may not work properly, leading to uncontrolled growth of cells and eventually a mass (tumor) of cancer cells (malignant cells).

Factors that increase your risk of developing thyroid cancer include:
- Be a woman
- Be older
