Intussusception

Intussusception (in-tuh-suh-SEP-shun) is a serious illness in which part of the intestine slips into an adjacent part of the intestine. This telescopic action often prevents the passage of food or liquids. Intussusception also interrupts the blood supply to the affected part of the intestine. The first sign of intussusception in an otherwise healthy infant may be sudden loud crying caused by abdominal pain. Infants with abdominal pain may pull their knees to their chests when they cry.
The pain of intussusception comes and goes, usually every 15 to 20 minutes first. These painful episodes last longer and become more common over time.
Other common signs and symptoms of intussusception include:
- Stools mixed with blood and mucus – sometimes called blackcurrant jelly stools because of their appearance
- Vomit
- A lump in your stomach
- Weakness or lack of energy
The reasons
Your intestines are shaped like a long tube. Intussusception involves sliding part of your bowel – usually the small intestine – into an adjacent part. This is sometimes called telescoping because it is similar to how a collapsible telescope slides together.
In some cases, telescoping in adults is caused by abnormal growth of the intestine, such as a polyp or tumor (called a lead tip). Normal waveform contractions of the intestine grab this guide point and pull it and the lining of the intestine into the intestine in front of it. Risk factors
Risk factors for intussusception are:
- Age. Children, especially young children, are much more likely to develop intussusception than adults. It is the leading cause of intestinal obstruction in children aged 6 months to 3 years.
- Sex. Intussusception affects boys more often.
- Abnormal bowel formation at birth. Malrotation of the bowel is a condition in which the bowel does not grow or rotate properly, increasing the risk of intussusception.
- Certain conditions. Certain conditions such as cystic fibrosis, Henoch Schonlein purpura (also known as IgA vasculitis), Crohn’s disease, and celiac disease can increase the risk of intussusception. Intussusception Treatment in Hyderabad
Complications
Intussusception can cut off the blood supply to the affected part of the intestine. If left untreated, the lack of blood leads to the death of the intestinal wall tissue. The death of the tissue can lead to a tear (perforation) in the intestinal wall, which can lead to infection of the lining of the abdominal cavity (peritonitis).
Peritonitis is a potentially fatal disease that requires immediate medical attention. The signs and symptoms of peritonitis include:
- stomach pain
- Abdominal swelling
- fever
- Vomit
