- Keratoconus (ker-uh-toe-KOH-nus) occurs when your cornea – the transparent dome-shaped front of your eye – gradually thins and swells outward in a cone shape.
A conical cornea causes blurred vision and can lead to sensitivity to light and glare. Keratoconus typically affects both eyes, although it often affects one eye more than the other. The signs and symptoms of keratoconus may change as the disease progresses. They include:
- Blurred or distorted vision
- Increased sensitivity to bright light and glare, which can lead to driving problems at night

The reasons

Risk factors
These factors can increase your chances of getting keratoconus:
- Have a family history of keratoconus
- Rub the eyes vigorously
- Have certain medical conditions such as retinitis pigmentosa, Down syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, hay fever, and asthma
Complications
In some situations, your cornea can swell quickly, causing a sudden decrease in vision and scarring of the cornea. This is caused by a condition where the inner wall of your cornea breaks down and fluid can seep into the cornea (hydrops). The swelling will usually go away on its own, but a scar can form and affect your vision.
