Lice are tiny, wingless parasitic insects that feed on human blood. Lice are easily spread – especially by school children – through close personal contact and by sharing their personal belongings.
There are three types of lice:
- Lice. These lice are found on your scalp. They are easier to spot in the neck and over the ears.
- Body lice. These lice live in clothing and on bedding, and move on your skin to feed. Body lice most commonly affect people who are unable to bathe or wash their clothes regularly, such as: B. Homeless.

- Common signs and symptoms of lice include:
- Severe itching of the scalp, body or genital area.
- Tickling sensation from hair movement.
- Lice on the scalp, body, clothing or pubic hair, or the like. Adult lice can be about the size of a sesame seed or slightly larger.
- Lice eggs (nits) on hair shafts. Nits can be difficult to see because they are very small. They are easier to spot around the ears and neck. Nits can be confused with dandruff, but unlike dandruff, they are not easily removed from your hair.
The reasons
Lice feed on human blood and can affect the human head, body and pubic area. The female louse produces a sticky substance that firmly attaches each egg to the base of a hair shaft. The eggs hatch in six to nine days.
You can get lice by coming into contact with lice or their eggs. Lice cannot jump or fly. They spread through:
Face-to-face or body-to-body contact. This can happen when children or family members play or interact closely.
Proximity to stored personal items. Keeping contaminated clothing in closets, lockers, or on hooks at school, or keeping personal items like pillows, blankets, combs, and stuffed animals close at hand, can help lice spread.

It is difficult to prevent head lice from spreading to children in daycare centers and schools. There is so much close contact between children and their belongings that lice can spread easily. It does not reflect your own or your children’s hygiene habits, and it is not a failure on your part as a parent if your child gets head lice.

A number of small studies have shown that the ingredients in some of these products – mainly vegetable oils like coconut, olive, rosemary, and tea tree – can fight off lice. However, these products are classified as “natural” so they are not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and their safety and effectiveness have not been tested according to FDA standards.
Until more research shows the effectiveness of head lice prevention products, it’s best to just take thorough steps to get rid of the lice – and their eggs – so that you no longer have lice to treat.
- Ask your child to avoid face-to-face contact with classmates during play and other activities.
- Ask your child not to give any personal items such as hats, scarves, coats, combs, brushes, hair accessories and headphones.
- Ask your child to avoid common areas where more than one student’s hats and clothing are hung on a shared hook or kept in a locker.
- However, it is unrealistic to expect that you and your child can get rid of all kinds of contacts that can lead to the spread of lice.
