Metatarsalgia (met-uh-tahr-SAL-juh) is a condition in which the sole of the foot becomes painful and inflamed. You can develop it by participating in activities that include running and jumping. There are other causes as well, including deformity of the foot and shoes that are too tight or too loose.
Metatarsalgia, while usually not severe, can marginalize you. Fortunately, at-home treatments such as ice and rest often relieve symptoms. Wearing suitable shoes with cushioning insoles or arch supports can prevent or minimize future metatarsalgia problems. Metatarsalgia Treatment in Hyderabad
Symptoms of metatarsalgia can include:
- Sharp, sore, or burning pain in the sole of your foot – the part of the sole just behind your toes
- Pain that gets worse when you stand, run, bend your feet, or walk – especially barefoot on a hard surface – and get better when you rest
- Sharp or stabbing pain, numbness, or tingling in the toes
- A feeling of having a pebble in your shoe
Sometimes only one factor can lead to metatarsalgia. Most often, several factors are involved, including:
- Exercise or strenuous activity. Long distance runners are at risk for metatarsalgia, mainly because the forefoot absorbs a lot of force as you run. But anyone who engages in high impact sports is at risk, especially if their shoes are poorly fitted or worn.
- Certain shapes of feet. A high arch can put additional pressure on the metatarsal bones. There may also be a second toe that is longer than the big toe, which results in more weight than normal being transferred to the second metatarsal head.
- Deformities of the foot. Wearing shoes that are too small or high heels can cause your foot to become misshapen. A curled up toe (hammer) and swollen, painful bumps at the base of your big toes (balls of the feet) can cause metatarsalgia.

Almost anyone can develop metatarsalgia, but you are at a higher risk if you:
- Participate in high impact sports that involve running and jumping
