overview
A migraine headache can cause severe throbbing pain or a throbbing sensation, usually on one side of the head. It is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and extreme sensitivity to light and sound. Migraine attacks can last hours or even days, and the pain can be so severe that it interferes with your daily activities.
Some people experience a warning symptom called an aura before or with a headache. An aura can include visual disturbances such as flashes of light or blind spots, or other disturbances such as tingling on one side of the face or in one arm or leg and difficulty speaking.
Medication can help prevent some migraines and make them less painful. The right medications, combined with self-help measures and lifestyle changes, can help. Migraine Treatment in Hyderabad
symptoms
Migraines, which often begin in childhood, adolescence, or early adulthood, can progress into four stages: prodrome, aura, seizure, and postdroma. Not everyone who has migraines goes through all of the stages. Migraine Treatment in Hyderabad
Prodrome
A day or two before a migraine, you may notice subtle changes that warn of an impending migraine, including:
- constipation
- The mood changes from depression to euphoria
- Cravings
- Neck stiffness
- Increased thirst and urge to urinate
The reasons
While the causes of migraines are not fully understood, genetics and environmental factors seem to play a role.
Changes in the brain stem and its interactions with the trigeminal nerve, a major pathway of pain, may be involved. The same goes for imbalances in brain chemicals – including serotonin, which regulates pain in your nervous system.
Researchers are studying the role of serotonin in migraines. Other neurotransmitters play a role in migraine pain, including the peptide linked to the calcitonin gene (CGRP).
Risk factors
Several factors make migraines more likely, including:
- Family history. If you have a family member with migraines, chances are good that they will develop them too.
- Age. Migraines can start at any age, although the first is common in the teenage years. Migraines tend to peak in their thirties and gradually become less severe and rare in the decades that follow.
- Sex. Women are three times more likely to have migraines.
- Hormonal changes. For women with migraines, headsets can start just before or just after their period starts. They can also change during pregnancy or during menopause. Migraines usually improve after menopause. Migraine Treatment in Hyderabad
