Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a rare degenerative neurological disorder that affects your body’s involuntary (autonomic) functions, including blood pressure, breathing, bladder function, and motor skills.
Formerly known as Shy-Drager syndrome, olivopontocerebellar atrophy, or striatonigral degeneration, MSA shares many of the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, such as slow movements, stiff muscles, and poor balance.

Multiple system atrophy (MSA) affects many parts of your body. Symptoms usually develop in adulthood, usually in their 50s or 60s.
MSA is divided into two types: Parkinson’s and cerebellum. The type will depend on the symptoms you have at the time of diagnosis.
Parkinson’s type
This is the most common type of MSA. The signs and symptoms are similar to those of Parkinson’s disease, such as:

Slow movement (bradykinesia)
The reasons
- There is no known cause of multiple system atrophy (MSA). Some researchers are investigating a possible hereditary component or involvement of an environmental toxin in the disease process, but there is no substantial evidence to support these theories.
- MSA causes parts of your brain (cerebellum, basal ganglia, and brain stem) to deteriorate and shrink (atrophy), regulating the body’s internal functions, digestion, and motor control.
- Under a microscope, damaged brain tissue in people with MSA shows nerve cells (neurons) that contain abnormal amounts of a protein called alpha-synuclein.
