Your body makes white blood cells (leukocytes) that help fight bacterial infections, viruses, and fungi. Generally, if your child has too few or too many white blood cells, it means the following:
A low number of white blood cells (leukopenia) means that too few white blood cells are circulating in the blood. Low long-term white blood cell counts increases the risk of infection and can be caused by a number of different diseases and conditions.
A high number of white blood cells (leukocytosis) means that there are too many white blood cells circulating in the blood, usually due to an infection. There are different types of white blood cells with different disease fighting activities. The main types are:
- Neutrophils
- Lymphocytes
- Monocytes
- Eosinophils
- Basophils
White blood cell disorders that involve a certain type of white blood cell include:
- Neutropenia. Neutropenia (noo-troe-PEE-nee-uh) is a low level of neutrophils, a type of white blood cell that fights infections caused by fungi and bacteria. Neutropenia can be caused by cancer or by diseases, disorders, or infections that damage the bone marrow. In addition, certain drugs and other diseases or conditions can cause neutropenia.
- Lymphocytopenia. Lymphocytopenia (lim-foe-sie-toe-PEE-nee-uh) is a decrease in the number of lymphocytes, the type of white blood cells that protect your body from viral infections, among other things. Lymphocytopenia can be the result of an inherited syndrome, associated with certain diseases, or a side effect of drugs or other treatments.
- Monocyte disorders. Monocytes help get rid of dead or damaged tissue and help regulate your body’s immune response. Infections, cancer, autoimmune diseases, and other diseases can increase the number of monocytes. Decreased numbers can be the result of toxins, chemotherapy, and other causes.
- Eosinophilia. Eosinophilia (e-o-sin-o-FIL-e-uh) is a higher than normal number of eosinophils, a type of white blood cell that fights disease. Eosinophilia can be caused by a variety of conditions and disorders, most commonly an allergic reaction or a parasitic infection.
- Basophilic disorders. Basophils are only a small number of white blood cells, but they play a role in healing wounds, infections, and allergic reactions. A decrease in the number of basophils can be due to allergic reactions or infections. An increased number can be caused by certain types of blood cancers or other disorders.
