What is Phimosis?

As mentioned above, when a male has phimosis, it means that the foreskin does not retract behind the glans, which may cause a degree of penis pain. In children, phimosis is normal. One study showed that, at birth, 96% of males had a foreskin that could not be fully retracted; by the time these babies were 3 years old, however, nature had intervened and 90% of them were able to retract the foreskin all the way. At age 17, the figure of intact men who still experience phimosis falls to 1%.

However, it’s possible that even an adult male who has gone through the phimosis experience as a child and emerged with a properly retractable foreskin may at some point come down with an unwanted episode of phimosis. When this occurs in an adult, it is often medically referred to as “pathologic” or “true” phimosis.

Causes

Why would an adult male who has successfully retracted his foreskin develop phimosis? There are several factors which may be at play, including:

Balanitis.

Probably the most common culprit of phimosis in adult men is balanitis. When a man has balanitis, it causes the glans to swell up. With the increase in the size of the glans, the foreskin feels much tighter than normal and, in extreme cases, cannot be as comfortably retracted as it could prior to the swelling. This swelling is different than the normal swelling that occurs with an erection.

Thrush

Men sometimes contract a yeast infection on the penis, often known as thrush or candidiasis. The penis may become red, itchy and sore; there may be swelling due to the infection, which can bring about a phimosis condition. Sometimes thrush results in scarring. Layers of scar tissue around the glans may also cause a tightening of the foreskin, making retraction difficult.

Diabetes

Diabetes can on occasion contribute to a tightening of the foreskin. This occurs when glucose levels in urine are too high, resulting in an infection and subsequent swelling.

Treatment

Determining the cause of the phimosis is important, as this can help identify the best means of treatment. One of the most common causes of balanitis is improper penis hygiene, so men need to make sure that they regularly wash the entire penis, including underneath the foreskin. Treating thrush infections with an antifungal medication usually helps. And properly managing diabetes is important to maintain appropriate glucose levels.

Phimosis Cure Essential Information

When searching for a phimosis cure in an attempt to obtain relief after becoming afflicted with the unfortunate condition of having a painfully tight foreskin, it is essential include studying the phimosis condition itself as a prerequisite. You must consider the causes of phimosis, as well as what it consists of, how severe it can become, and how it can affect you before you can properly begin a phimosis treatment. Before learning more about these issues which you must keep in mind when choosing a phimosis cure, we will define exactly what phimosis is.

What is phimosis?

Well, to put it simply phimosis is a condition experienced by some men in which the foreskin becomes extremely tight, and cannot be retracted past the glans of the penis. This can be very problematic and disruptive to a man’s life. It can be very painful, especially when it becomes erect; something that many men typically find pleasurable in most situations. When phimosis becomes severe, it may even force a circumcision of a foreskin as a last resort phimosis cure; after all other options have been deemed inadequate.

Phimosis is usually caused in adults by a series of infections. These infections can be the result of improper hygiene. Some cases of phimosis are a result of complications during young childhood which can cause phimosis to develop. If the foreskin is forcefully retracted during infancy, this can damage its structure and cause conditions under which phimosis develops.

With the proper resources, and an adequate phimosis cure treatment plan, one can successfully treat phimosis from home, discreetly and without the need for surgery. This is fortunate, as many men are embarrassed by their phimosis issue, or do not want to visit a doctor out of fear they will be pressured into an unwanted circumcision. Some doctors have been known to call for circumcision when not actually necessary, because it is a quick and easy for them, yet painful and expensive for the patient.

In addition to the obvious pain aspect of phimosis, many are actively searching for a phimosis cure because of the mental anguish. What was once a proud man may become withdrawn, dreading a sexual encounter in fear of not being able to perform. Sexual intercourse while being afflicted with phimosis would be extremely painful, and is near impossible depending on the severity. Even if intercourse is not attempted, a penis inflicted with phimosis is not visually appealing by any standard. All of these issues to worry about in addition to the pain aspect often can spur a severe mental impact on an individual, driving them to seek out a phimosis cure.

Be sure to consider all of these issues before starting a phimosis cure. If you do not do adequate research, you will not be able to properly understand how you contracted phimosis, how you can best cure it, how to avoid getting it in the future, or how it can affect you. It Is best that you first try all avenues to cure phimosis from home, as this is often cheaper and most definitely less embarrassing than seeing a doctor. The vast majority of phimosis cases are resolved using a phimosis cure from home with no surgery.

Is There a Simple Way to Treat Phimosis?

What exactly is Phimosis? Well, in common terms phimosis refers to a condition where the foreskin does not retract properly from the glans (or head) of the penis. In medical terms, however phimosis is a more specific condition where there is scarring and obstruction of the opening of the foreskin caused by Balanitis Xerotica Obliterans or BXO. This is a localised condition of the skin and is distinguished by white patches on the head of the penis and a white ring of hardened skin at the tip of the foreskin. The cause of BXO is not known, however it is generally the one cause of tight foreskin for which circumcision is required.

There are various causes of tight foreskin or what is generally termed ‘phimosis’, but very often it is simply because males are born that way. This is ‘Congenital Phimosis’ and all males are born with it. This usually resolves itself with development into adulthood, however for some the condition persists into later years.

There is a tendency for medical practitioners to immediately prescribe circumcision for phimosis, however there are much less drastic options which should be explored in the first instance, and surgery should only be used as a last resort.

So what can you do about it? Very often, simple stretching exercises will be able to sort it out. The majority of phimosis cases can be suitably loosened by careful stretching of the foreskin. This may be manual or can be assisted with a proprietary stretching instrument. Stretching exercises should be tried initially before any other treatment, however you should seek advice from your medical practitioner before undertaking exercises, to rule out any underlying medical reasons for your tight foreskin. It is also important that stretching is carried out correctly to avoid paraphimosis. This is where the foreskin becomes trapped behind the head of the penis and if this persists for a number of hours or if there are any signs of a lack of blood flow it should be treated as a medical emergency.

A less radical surgical procedure than circumcision is Preputial Plasty. This involves a small cut being made in the foreskin in order to widen the preputial ring so that the foreskin can pass over the head of the penis. This can be an effective cure for phimosis, it is usually done under local anaesthetic, and is much less severe than circumcision.

Non-surgical, conservative treatments for phimosis and foreskin problems are much easier and cheaper than circumcision, however many physicians are unaware of these and it has been estimated that 7 out of 10 circumcisions for medical reasons are unnecessary, and could have been treated with less radical means.

Stretching exercises, when carried out correctly are the simplest of all cures for phimosis and while they won’t cure all cases, they should be considered the first step before any other treatment is considered.

Penis Pain and Adult Phimosis

It’s not uncommon for young intact males to experience some form of phimosis, a situation in which the foreskin is too tight to comfortably retract. Adult phimosis is rarer, but needs to be treated, as it can be a source of considerable penis pain and discomfort. Even intact men who engage in proper penis health routines may fall prey to this condition, so knowing how to treat it is well advised.
