Sarcoma is a type of cancer that can appear in different parts of your body.
Sarcoma is the general term for a large group of cancers that start in the bones and soft tissues (also known as connective tissue) (soft tissue sarcoma). A soft tissue sarcoma forms in the tissues that connects, supports and surrounds other body structures. This includes muscles, fat, blood vessels, nerves, tendons, and the lining of your joints. Signs and symptoms of a sarcoma include:
- A lump that can be felt through the skin and may or may not be painful

It is not known what causes most sarcomas.
Cancer usually develops when changes (mutations) occur in the DNA of cells. The DNA in a cell is packaged in a large number of individual genes, each of which contains a series of instructions that tell the cell what functions to perform and how to grow and divide.
Risk factors
Factors that can increase your risk of sarcoma include:
Hereditary Syndromes. Some syndromes that increase the risk of cancer can be passed from parents to children. Familial retinoblastoma and type 1 neurofibromatosis are examples of syndromes that increase the risk of sarcoma.
