In the United States, the bark scorpion, found primarily in the southwestern desert, is the only species of scorpion whose venom is potent enough to cause severe symptoms. Worldwide, only 30 of around 1,500 species of scorpion produce venom poisonous enough to be fatal. With more than a million scorpion stings annually, deaths from these stings are a significant public health problem in areas where access to medical care is limited.

The reasons
- A scorpion sting is caused by the sting in the tail of a scorpion. When a scorpion stings, its sting can release poison. The poison contains a complex mixture of toxins that affect the nervous system (neurotoxins).
- Scorpions are arthropods – a relative of insects, spiders, and crustaceans. Bark scorpions are about two inches long. Scorpions have eight legs and a pair of lobster-shaped claws and a curved tail. Risk factors
Some activities can increase your risk of getting a scorpion sting:
Live where the scorpions are. In the United States, scorpions live primarily in the desert in the southwest, mainly in Arizona, New Mexico, and parts of California. Globally, they are most commonly found in Mexico, North Africa, South America, the Middle East, and India.
Work, hike or camp where the scorpions are. Bark scorpions live under rocks, tree trunks and tree bark – hence the name. You are particularly likely to encounter one while working, hiking, or camping outdoors.
Complications
Very old and very young people are most likely to die from untreated venomous scorpion stings. The cause is usually heart or respiratory failure that occurs a few hours after the bite. Very few deaths from scorpion stings have been reported in the United States.
Another possible complication of scorpion stings, though rare, is a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis).
prevention
Scorpios tend to avoid contact. If you live in an area where Scorpios are common, avoid chance encounters by doing the following:
- Remove piles of stones or wood from your house and do not store firewood against or inside the house.
- Keep the grass densely mowed and prune any overhanging bushes and branches that may provide a path for scorpions to your roof.
