The headache from thunderbolt is dramatic. Symptoms include pain that:
- Strikes suddenly and violently
- Tips in 60 seconds
- May be accompanied by nausea or vomiting
- Thunderbolt headache may be accompanied by other signs and symptoms, such as:
- Altered state of mind
- fever
- Seizures
The reasons
There is no obvious cause of lightning headaches. In other cases, various life-threatening conditions may be responsible, including:
- Bleeding between the brain and the membranes covering the brain (subarachnoid haemorrhage)
- A broken blood vessel in the brain
- A tear in the lining of an artery that supplies blood to the brain
- Leaking cerebrospinal fluid – usually due to a tear in the lining around a nerve root in the spine
- Tissue death or bleeding in the pituitary gland
- A blood clot in the brain
- Sharp rise in blood pressure (hypertensive crisis)
- Infections such as meningitis or encephalitis
- Ischemic stroke.
