- An umbilical hernia occurs when part of your bowel swells through the opening in your abdominal muscles near your belly button (navel). Umbilical hernias are common and usually harmless.
Umbilical hernias are more common in infants, but can affect adults as well. In an infant, an umbilical hernia can be particularly noticeable if the infant is crying and the belly button pops out. It’s a classic sign of an umbilical hernia. Umbilical hernia Treatment in Hyderabad
An umbilical hernia causes a slight swelling or bulge near the umbilicus. In babies with an umbilical hernia, the bulge may only be visible when they are crying, coughing, or getting tired.
Umbilical hernias in children are usually painless. Umbilical hernias that occur in adulthood can cause abdominal discomfort.
During pregnancy, the umbilical cord runs through a small opening in the baby’s abdominal muscles. The opening usually closes right after birth. If the muscles do not fully connect with the midline of the abdominal wall, an umbilical hernia can occur at birth or later in life.
In adults, excessive abdominal pressure contributes to umbilical hernias. Causes of increased pressure in the abdomen are:
- Multiple pregnancies
- Fluid in the abdominal cavity
- Previous abdominal surgery
Umbilical hernias are more common in infants – especially premature babies and those with low birth weights. In the United States, black infants appear to have a slightly increased risk of umbilical hernias. The disease affects boys and girls equally. Umbilical hernia Treatment in Hyderabad
In adults, being overweight or having multiple pregnancies can increase the risk of an umbilical hernia.
This type of hernia is more common in women.
In children, complications from an umbilical hernia are rare. Complications can arise when the protruding abdominal tissue becomes trapped and cannot be pushed back into the abdominal cavity. This reduces the blood supply to the enclosed section of the intestine and can lead to abdominal pain and tissue damage.
If the trapped part of the intestine is completely cut off from the blood supply, it can lead to tissue death. The infection can spread throughout the abdominal cavity and cause a potentially life-threatening situation. Umbilical hernia Treatment in Hyderabad
