Common Causes of Varicose Veins

Varicose veins and their smaller cousins, spider veins, are the result of venous insufficiency. Tiny valves in your veins, which normally prevent the backflow of old blood, falter and begin to suffer from dysfunction. This allows blood to pool up in areas of high pressure, such as the legs. Varicose veins appear as thick, ropy blue lines beneath your skin, and this venous insufficiency can be both unsightly and painful.

In some cases, varicose veins cannot be prevented due to genetics. Researchers have found that most people are much more likely to develop varicose or spider veins if their parents or grandparents had the same problem. Thus, heredity is a major player with varicose veins.

However, not all common sources of venous insufficiency are completely unavoidable. In fact, by recognizing other common causes of varicose veins, you can work to prevent your veins from becoming insufficient. First, your age has much to do with varicose veins, with most people developing this problem between the ages of 50 and 60 as blood vessels lose elasticity. While you cannot prevent yourself from aging, you can work hard to exercise and strengthen your veins as you approach older age.

Next, another cause of faulty veins is excess weight. Besides other health problems, excess weight and obesity places more pressure on your legs. This can weaken your blood vessels, allowing blood to pool. Therefore, try to exercise and maintain a constant, healthy weight to keep your veins working smoothly.

Additionally, your lifestyle and occupation can play a large role in developing venous insufficiency. If you stand or sit for long periods of time, these positions can make it difficult for your heart to pump away blood that pools in your legs. If you do have a career that forces you to sit or stand for long periods of time, try to change position every ten minutes to avoid problems. For instance, if you sit at a desk, you can flex your ankles and calves every few minutes to keep blood flowing.
