The Symptoms of Varicose Veins
Varicose veins are a common problem that are usually not a serious condition. It is estimated that almost half of the population over the age of 50 have them, with women being affected more than men. They can also be referred to as spider veins and are more of a cosmetic issue than a health one. There are several causes from genetics, to pregnancy, to age.
Varicose veins usually don’t have any pain or discomfort associated with them and the appearance of them is usually the only symptom. They can be blue or purplish in colour and can look like twisted and winding veins that may have bulges in places. Their resemblance to spider legs is why they are sometimes referred to as spider veins. Varicose veins are usually found in the legs but can appear in other parts of the body as well.
Aside from the visible manifestation of the veins as being a primary symptom other symptoms may include, a heavy feeling in the legs, muscle cramps or swelling. These symptoms may be alleviated by sitting down and elevating the feet. Varicose veins are a result of decreased blood flow through the veins in the legs which causes blood to back up and pool within blood vessels, so the symptoms of cramping or aching legs can be present without visible signs.
It is especially important to be aware of the varicose veins symptoms becoming a more serious problem. Most people only suffer with the surface materialization or the mild discomfort from throbbing legs and muscle aches, however, varicose veins can cause complications albeit rare. Ulcers are a more serious risk factor. They are a result of fluid building up with in the tissue of the leg over a long period of time. Ulcers associated with varicose veins will usually appear around the ankles. Another serious risk factor could be blood clots. The symptoms that would indicate a blood clot would be sudden and considerable swelling of the leg. If this should happen immediate medical attention is necessary.
For most people they are a nuisance and more of an issue of vanity than a serious health problem. Whether it is more for cosmetic reasons, to ease the discomfort of aching legs or in the rare cases of more serious problems varicose veins are easily treated. A brief consultation with your doctor regarding the veins that you notice appearing on your legs or the aching feeling at the end of the day can be the first step to an easy

What Is Your Risk for Varicose Veins?
There are many risk factors that further a person’s chance to develop varicose veins. If the risks are known, then preventive measures can be taken to evade the issue. The first thing to do is know what the risk factors are.
The risk of developing varicose veins only increases with age. The aging process causes every day wear on the valves in the veins that help to regulate the flow of blood. Eventually, this wear causes the valves to allow blood to flow back into veins where it then collects instead of flowing up to a heart. This is the process that causes the appearance of varicose veins.
Another risk factor is the gender of a person. Women are much more likely than their male counterpart to develop symptoms. There are hormonal changes during pregnancy that can cause the condition. Pre-menstruation or even menopause has been known to be a factor. Female hormones have a tendency to weaken vein walls. These issues are female exclusive thus raising the factor for women.
Women that have a family history of blood clots in their veins or even chronic vein disease are at an increased risk of developing varicose veins. This is because vein disease risk is affected by genes and also environmental factors that family members tend to share. Genes that are inherited from parents and shared with siblings can predispose a person to conditions that put them at risk for vein disease.
Obesity is another strong factor in determining a person’s risk factor for developing varicose veins. If a person is overweight, this puts added pressure on their veins. The excess fat increases the pressure on the vascular system of the legs. The pressure doesn’t allow the blood to flow easily. The blood then pools which forms the condition by weakening the wall.
Sitting or even standing for longer periods of time will also affect a person’s chance at developing varicose veins. Blood will not flow as well if a person is in the same position for long periods of time. The lack of movement especially if legs are crossed forces the heart to work harder to pump the blood.
