All You Need to Know About Varicose Veins

A varicose vein by definition is a swollen, twisted or gnarled vein that becomes enlarged because of an excessive amount of blood pooling in. Normal veins have valves that keep the blood moving from the vein toward the heart. Varicose veins do not function this way, thus blood remains in the vein instead of moving. The blood then pools in the vessel and causes the vein to swell, twist and enlarge. They usually occur in the legs but they can happen elsewhere in the body. Further, women are the usual sufferers.

What are the causes?

They have different causes. First, they can be a result of defective valves present at birth. Second, pregnancy can cause them because of hormonal changes. In fact, 40% of all women will get them when pregnant. When progesterone levels increase it causes blood vessels to relax, the two valve halves may separate slightly. This allows for back-flow of blood into the vein. The vein then swells with the pooled blood. Further, when an enlarged uterus presses against the veins in the pelvic area, this can aggravate the problem. When this happens there is an increase in pressure of the leg area and varicose veins are more of a possibility. Also, a family history will increase the chances of developing varicose veins during pregnancy. Third, thrombophlebitis can cause the trouble. Thrombophlebitis is when the vein becomes inflamed and enlarged due to a blood clot. When they are due to congenitally defective valves or for an unknown cause it is called primary varicose veins. When another condition causes it, it is known as secondary varicose veins.

Symptoms

A person with varicose veins may have a feeling of fullness, aches and maybe even pain in the legs. Visible veins that are obviously enlarged will be present. They may have mild swelling in the ankles, brown discoloration of skin at the ankles and in extreme cases, there may be skin ulcers in the ankle region.

Whether they’re caused by congenitally defective valves or from pregnancy or other known conditions, they can be treated. Conservative treatments include limiting standing, wearing supportive hose and propping legs up as much as possible. However, surgery may be necessary if pain is severe or if there are ulcers around the ankle due to poor circulation.
