Risk Factors and Causes of Varicose Veins

In the body, blood is carried from the heart to the different parts of the body through the arteries. The blood is then returned back to the heart and lungs through the veins. The veins contain valves, that when working properly, allow the blood to flow in one direction back to the heart and lungs. There are three types of veins: superficial, deep, and perforator. The superficial veins are the ones located near the skin. The deep veins are the ones wrapped around the muscles. Perforator veins connect superficial veins to the deep veins. The legs contain both superficial and deep veins. Muscles contractions act as pumps that pump the blood through the veins back to the heart and lungs. Blood flows from the superficial veins to the larger deep veins and back to the heart and lungs. When a vein fails, it allows blood to flow backwards into the superficial veins causing the vein to become thick and bulge out. When this happens, the vein is varicose. Varicose veins can occur anywhere in the body, but mostly found in the thigh and leg areas. It is estimated that some 25 million people in the U.S. deal with varicose veins.

Symptoms include, visible bulging out of veins, the veins can appear dark blue or purple, the legs ache and or feel heavy, burning and throbbing of the muscles (in the lower leg area), and itching around one or more veins.

Risk factors and causes

Varicose veins are usually harmless. However, there at times varicose veins that might need attention. If the vein is bumped or cut, bleeding can occur. When this happens, raise the leg up and apply pressure to the area to stop the bleeding. If the bleeding does not stop seek medical attention immediately. Trouble breathing or chest pain is another risk factor. This can happen if a blood clot forms in the blood vessels of the heart and lungs. If experiencing these symptoms, get to the hospital at once. Some causes include, age, pregnancy, gender, family history, obesity, and standing or sitting for a prolong time.

There are some treatments of varicose veins that can be done at home. Some of these treatments are, avoid crossing legs, don’t drink alcohol, get plenty of exercise, and eat a proper diet. If medical treatment is needed, there is a process called closure procedure. The closure procedure is when a small catheter is inserted into the vein, then the wall of the vein is heated causing the vein to collapse. The catheter is removed thus closing that vein. The blood is redirected to a healthy vein. This procedure causes less bruising and scaring compared to surgery or laser treatments.
